CATCH/SHOOT WRESTLING

Catch wrestling is a hybrid grappling style that was developed in Britain circa 1870 then later refined and popularised by the wrestlers of travelling fairs who developed their own submission holds, or "hooks", into their wrestling to increase their effectiveness against their opponents. Catch wrestling derives from a number of styles: the English styles of Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, Cornwall and Devon wrestling, Lancashire wrestling, Irish collar-and-elbow wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling, Japanese judo & jujutsu, styles of the Indian subcontinent such as Pehlwani and Iranian styles such as Varzesh-e Pahlavani. Shoot wrestling is a Japanese based grappling art (without the gi) based on freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, Sambo, and catch wrestling, which later incorporated karate, Muay Thai, and Judo.

SELF DEFENSE

The Akumu system is an eclectic art that resembles a more aggresive Japanese/Thai/Filipino version of JKD. It blends aspects of Pekiti Tirsia Kali, Jujutsu, Aikijutsu, Filipino blade work, Muay Thai, Bando, Ban Thai Kenpo, CACC Wrestling and even a lil old school Ninjutsu, all together into a VERY street effective self defense system.

We are the only representitives of The Akumu System outside of the state of Colorado. The arts of Goshin Japanese Jiujutsu, Aikijutsu, Ban Thai are ranked under the Akumu Soke Randall Brown.

GRACIE JIUJITSU/JUDO

Jiu-jitsu Brasileiro is a martial art, combat sport, and a self defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu evolved from Japanese Jujutsu and Judo ground fighting fundamentals that were taught by a number of individuals including Takeo Yano, Mitsuyo Maeda and Soshihiro Satake. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu eventually came to be its own art through the experiments, practices, and adaptation of judo through many Bazilizian practitioners including the famous Gracie brothers, who passed their knowledge on to their extended family.BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments, mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self-defense. Sparring (commonly referred to as "rolling") and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance in relation to progress and ascension through its ranking system. Since its inception in 1882, its parent art of judo was separated from older systems of Japanese Jujutsu by an important difference that was passed on to Brazilian jiu-jitsu: it is not solely a martial art, it is also a sport; a method for promoting physical fitness and building character in young people; and, ultimately, a way of life.

We are BJJ representitives of 7th Degree Master Marcelo Ferreria's BJJ assocition, under the supervision of the head of the US divisions, 5th Degree Black Belt Professor Bruce Shepherd of The JiuJitsu Academy in Evansville, Indiana.

Our Judo program is under the supervision of 6th Dan Sensei Eberhard Kieslich of Toshi Dojo Brandenburg.

JKD/FMA

Jeet Kune Do, abbreviated JKD, is an eclectic and hybrid style fighting art heavily influenced by the philosophy of martial artist Bruce Lee, who founded the system in 1967. Sigung referred to it as "non-classical", suggesting that JKD is a form of Chinese Kung Fu, yet without form. Unlike more traditional martial arts, Jeet Kune Do is not fixed or patterned, and is a philosophy with guiding thoughts. It was named for the Wing Chun concept of interception or attacking while one's opponent is about to attack. Jeet Kune Do practitioners believe in minimal movements with maximum effects and extreme speed. The system works by using different "tools" for different situations, where the situations are divided into ranges, which are kicking, punching, trapping, and grappling, where martial artists use techniques to flow smoothly between them. The Filipino Martial Art systems of Kali and Majapahit Silat were introduced into JKD thru Guru Dan Inosanto, one of Sigung Lee's top students and the man Sigung handed the evolution of JKD over to prior toi his death. They are now all trained under the JKD umbrella.

We are proud representatives of Guru Dan's JKD system and the Pekiti Tirsia Kali system under the Akumu Ryu.

MUAY THAI

Muay Thai, translated into English as Thai Boxing, is the national sport of Thailand and is a martial art with origins in the ancient battlefield tactics of the Siamese (or Thai) army. It evolved from Krabi Krabong, literally long and short weapons, the weapons tactics of the Thai army.Muay Thai is known as “King of the Ring” in kickboxing circles. These fights feature punches, kicks, elbows, knees, standing grappling and head-butts to wear down and knock out their opponent. Thai training methods develop devastating power, speed and superb cardio-vascular endurance as well as fighting spirit. Muay Thai training is also quite safe thanks to sophisticated pad training that evolved to keep fighters healthy between fights. Muay Thai has also proven very effective outside the ring and has been embraced enthusiastically by practitioners of a variety of self-defense, sporting, military and law enforcement activities.

We are proud repesentatives of both the Thai Boxing Association of the USA and also the World Muay Thai Council.
